We have built tools that compress time: instant messages, one-click answers, summaries of summaries. Somewhere in that compression, depth got left behind.

What slow thinking actually means

Slow thinking isn’t laziness. It is the deliberate act of resisting the first, loudest answer. It is the practice of holding a question open — like a window — and letting air move through it before you close it into a conclusion.

The psychologist Daniel Kahneman called this System 2 thinking: effortful, deliberate, and often uncomfortable. It requires you to stay in uncertainty a little longer than feels natural.
